Small talk at networking events: What you're working on right now

🇯🇵 [はじめまして。] is the standard first-time greeting when you meet someone new. At networking events it's normal to pair it with your name and then [よろしくお願いします。].

💬 [です] makes a statement polite, as in [田中です。] or [会社員です。] In conversation it's often pronounced lightly, almost like the [u] is barely there.

💬 With names, Japanese often just says [^FIRST^ ^LAST^ です。] literally "[name] is," meaning "I'm [name]." You can swap in a job the same way: [エンジニアです。] = "I'm an engineer."

🇯🇵 In [よろしくお願いします。], this isn't a direct "please" for a specific action. It's a set phrase for starting a relationship politely, so at introductions it lands more like "I look forward to working with you" or "Nice to meet you."

💬 [どんな] means "what kind of," so it asks for a type or description, not just an identity. You can reuse it with lots of nouns: [どんな会社] "what kind of company?" or [どんな人] "what kind of person?".

💬 Adding [か] turns [です] into a polite question: [学生です。] becomes [学生ですか。] In speech, the rising intonation also helps signal it's a question.
