Chinese
💬 [汉语] and [中文] both mean Chinese, but [汉语] is a bit more language-focused: you often see it in phrases like [学习汉语]. In everyday speech, [中文] is also extremely common.
See breakdown →你会说英语吗?
nǐ huì shuō yīng yǔ ma
Do you speak English?
💬 [会] here means "know how to" or "can because you've learned it," so [你会说英语吗?] is asking about ability, not permission. You can reuse the pattern with other skills: [你会说汉语吗?] or [你会写中文吗?]
See breakdown →学习汉语
xué xí hàn yǔ
Learning Chinese
💬 [学习汉语] is a verb plus what you're learning: [学习] + [汉语]. You can swap in other subjects the same way, like [学习英语] or [学习中文].
See breakdown →我正在学习中文
wǒ zhèng zài xué xí zhōng wén
I'm learning Chinese
💬 [正在] puts focus on "right now / in progress," so [我正在学习中文] means you're in the middle of learning, not just that you study Chinese in general. You can use the same pattern in [我正在吃饭] or [他正在工作].
See breakdown →我不懂
wǒ bù dǒng
I do not understand
💬 [懂] is specifically "understand," often in the sense of following what someone means, so [我不懂] is a very natural short reply. You can also use it in questions like [你懂吗?] or [你听得懂吗?]
See breakdown →重复
chóng fù
Repeat
🇨🇳 On its own, [重复] sounds blunt in real conversation, more like a command or a label than a polite request. With strangers, people are more likely to say a fuller phrase like [你能再说一遍吗?]
See breakdown →你能再说一遍吗?
nǐ néng zài shuō yī biàn ma
Can you repeat that?
💬 [再] means "again, one more time" here, and [一遍] counts one full run-through of saying something. The same pattern works with other actions: [再看一遍] means "look at it again once."
See breakdown →慢慢说
màn màn shuō
Speak slowly
🇨🇳 [慢慢说] is understandable, but said directly it can sound a bit sharp depending on tone. With strangers, [你可以说慢一点吗?] usually lands softer and more polite.
