Visiting the ward office: Enrolling national health insurance

🇯🇵 [すみません] is the standard polite way to get a clerk's attention in Japan, softer than a direct call like [ねえ]. It also works for small apologies, so you'll hear it constantly at counters.

💬 [入りたいです] is [入る] + [たいです], a very common way to say you want to do something. You can swap in other verbs the same way: [見たいです] "I want to see," [払いしたいです] would be wrong, but [払い] is not the verb form here.

💬 [に入る] is the pattern for joining or entering something, so [国民健康保険に入りたいです] is literally "I want to enter/join national health insurance." Use the same [に] with other things you join: [会社に入る], [クラブに入る].

🇯🇵 At a ward office this can sound a little more scripted than warm, like "welcome" at a service counter. You're more likely to hear it from staff than say it yourself.

💬 Japanese often leaves out [私が] here, so [お手伝いします] naturally means "I'll help you." That dropping of the subject happens constantly in service situations.

💬 [何が必要ですか] is literally "what is necessary?" Japanese often uses [必要です] where English uses "need." You can reuse it with nouns: [何が必要ですか], [パスポートは必要ですか].
